Welcome to Outlook Import/Export – Hints & Tips
Welcome to Outlook Contact Import/Export, all things related to issues to getting contact information into and out of Outlook. In addition there will be a variety of other topics covered which are directly and indirectly related to import export such as user-defined fields, custom forms, information on specific Outlook fields, good practices to follow in general, safeguarding your information and the like.
Many of the upcoming topics may not be immediately relevant to those that do not currently import or export information but there is one truism that is worth noting which is “whatever may be true today may not be true tomorrow and the practices you follow today may have a direct impact on how many (or how few) problems you encounter when a new requirement suddenly changes the world you operate in”.
On the surface, importing/exporting data is a very simple and straight-forward process, so easy in fact, that virtually anyone can easily write their own custom code in a hour or two following any number of free code samples available to accomplish any specialized tasks no matter how “non-technical” you may be. In a perfect world, where there are no exceptions to the rule, and everything is a known quantity, that is absolutely true. Introduce a minor exception or two and suddenly the “quick and dirty” task can become a very long drawn out process which accounts for why a very large part of all ContactGenie code is dedicated solely to the handling of exceptions either from unexpected operational issues or to deal with the never-ending creative ways used by people to store/maintain data.
The underlying basis for all upcoming articles is always going to be – “getting the job done as quickly and as easily as possible using the path of least resistance to ensure the least amount of problems – both today and tomorrow”.
